Hiking week – culture, nature and history in the Lower Engadine
Programme in June/July
The Lower Engadine offers countless nature walks around the Swiss National Park. This year, local hiking guide Andrea Matossi is combining the walks with visits to churches, museums and a natural medicine day focusing on medicinal plants.
Immerse yourself in the past and present of the Lower Engadin under the expert guidance of local specialists. The excursions always last around six hours, the hikes take between four and five hours, and there is a maximum of 500 metres of elevation gain to overcome.
Sunday
Arrival
Easy walk to get started. We will show you Scuol with its beautiful Engadine houses featuring ornate sgraffito decorations and the late Gothic church of St. George, situated on a mighty rock. Meeting point at 3.30 p.m. in the hotel lobby. Duration approx. 2 hours.
Monday
Martina – Chaflur – Strada – San Niclà
The hike starts in Martina after a 20-minute bus ride. Via Chaflur, we reach Strada and San Niclà, passing four churches along the way. Finally, we visit the printing museum in Strada. Our hiking guide Andrea, a trained typesetter, shows us how printing was done in the olden days. The building is also an old Engadine house, furnished and equipped as it was in times gone by.
Tuesday
Ramosch – Vnà – Zuort – Sent
The post bus takes us to Ramosch, where we visit the second largest church in the canton of Graubünden. The journey continues to Vnà and Zuort, where we marvel at the wooden chapel designed by Wilhelm Mengelberg. In Sent, we visit the church with its neo-Gothic tower, which is visible from afar.
Wednesday
Tarasp – Vulpera – Scuol
Tarasp is the only village in the Engadin that was not reformed, which is why we visit the Catholic church there. While we are there, we take a look at Tarasp Castle before hiking via Vulpera to Scuol, where we admire the Engadin Museum.
Thursday
Ftan – Ardez – Guarda
Following in the footsteps of Schellenursli, we take the post bus to Ftan and stop in Ardez before continuing on to Guarda. We may descend on foot to Giarsun. Churches and the Schellenursli Museum are located along the way. We are accompanied by pharmacist Martina Melcher, who tells us many interesting facts about natural remedies.
Friday
Lavin – Susch – Zernez
Once again, we take public transport, this time to Lavin. The church in Lavin has beautiful frescoes from the pre-Reformation period. In Susch, we can visit the Muzeum Susch with its contemporary art, and in Zernez, the National Park House. There are also churches worth seeing in Susch and Zernez.
